Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GST, HST, PST, and QST?
GST is the 5% federal tax charged everywhere in Canada. Five provinces merged their provincial tax with it into a single HST (13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia, 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and PEI). British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba charge a separate PST on top of GST, and Quebec charges QST at 9.975%. Alberta and the three territories charge GST only.
How do I remove sales tax from a Canadian price?
Divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate. In Ontario (13% HST), a $113 total becomes $100 before tax. In Alberta (5% GST), divide by 1.05. The calculator does this when you switch it to "Remove".
Why did Nova Scotia's rate change?
Nova Scotia cut its HST from 15% to 14% on 1 April 2025 by reducing the provincial portion. This calculator already uses the 14% rate.
Is Quebec's tax really 14.975%?
Combined, yes: 5% GST plus 9.975% QST, both charged on the pre-tax price, add up to 14.975%. QST used to be calculated on top of GST, but since 2013 both apply to the selling price directly.
Are prices in Canada shown with or without tax?
Without, in nearly all shops. Unlike VAT countries, the tax is added at the till, so a $10 shelf price costs $11.30 at an Ontario checkout. This trips up almost every visitor.
