Tip Calculator

Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage, and see the tip, the total, and the per-person share if you are splitting. Adjust the sliders afterwards to nudge the numbers.

The quick mental math

For 20%, move the decimal point one place left and double it: on a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40, so 20% is $12.80. For 15%, take the 10% figure and add half of it again ($6.40 plus $3.20 is $9.60). The calculator does the exact version, including the split.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is the usual range for table service, with 18% a common middle ground. Counter service is more discretionary. Outside the US the norms differ a lot: 5-10% is generous in much of Europe, and in Japan tipping can even be seen as rude.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Convention says pre-tax, and that is what etiquette guides recommend. In practice most people tip on the total because that is the number at the bottom of the receipt. On a typical bill the difference is small.

How do I split an uneven bill fairly?

This calculator splits the total (bill plus tip) evenly by headcount, which suits most casual meals. If one person ordered far more than the others, it is usually easier to have them add a fixed amount before splitting the rest.

Is a service charge the same as a tip?

No. A service charge is added by the restaurant and usually goes to the house, not necessarily to your server. If a service charge is already on the bill, an extra tip is optional.
